Donald “Don” Knudsen founded Knudsen’s Pipe Dream in Winnipeg in 1972. It began as a specialty tobacco shop selling pipes, cigars and custom-blended pipe tobacco. The business eventually expanded to two Winnipeg stores and about ten stores across Canada, with a substantial mail-order operation.
The business reached well beyond Manitoba. Historical advertising shows Knudsen’s Pipe Dream locations in Winnipeg, Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver and Toronto.
Although this needs to be verified, there appears to be a surviving Knudsen’s-labelled tobacco tradition in Western Canada. Knudsen’s Vanilla Maple is still being sold as a bulk pipe tobacco in Alberta. It is described as a mild aromatic consisting of red Virginia, Black Cavendish and Burley, with vanilla and maple flavouring.
The Winnipeg operation of Knudsen’s occurred during the pipe-smoking period of the 1970s-1990s, and its house blends seem to have developed something of a following. Custom blending was part of the business model. Knudsen’s was an independent blending house, with tobaccos made from carefully selected leaf and blended by hand to suit individual smokers.
It is unknown at this time who provided the leaf to Knudsen’s for the blending. That will require further snooping around.
There exist surviving Knudsen’s Pipe Dream-branded pipes made by major European manufacturers. One example is a Savinelli 320KS, stamped:

The researcher who documented it also found an earlier Knudsen pipe made by Charatan in London, England.
Don passed away in 2022 at the age of 85. His obituary says that after the Pipe Dream years he ultimately went into advertising in Southern California. So the chain he started change ownership/management or was dismantled long before his death. Yet the name persisted in Saskatchewan.
In August of 2026, I was combing through some pipe posts online when I stumbled across an estate sale where a Svendborg pipe was being offered for sale. The pipe came with the original sock and box, along with some “Old Pal” pipe cleaner packages, some “Czech tools” and two pouches of dried tobacco. I dated these all to the very early 1980’s.
The pipe had been smoked only a couple of times and it took very light work to get the stem black and ready to smoke. I cleaned out the pipe and let it dry overnight. In the morning, I brought the pipe out and loaded it up with some of the pipe tobacco. It was dry, but smokeable right away and quite pleasant.
The pipe also came with the original plastic bag from the store, and a brochure outlining the various blends Knudsen offered.
Not a bad snag for $100.00 !
