Weather: Today was about the same as yesterday; no rain and just a touch windy up near the coast(s). A pleasant but cloudy day with very little bright sunshine. Happy there was no rain.
Morning Summary
A sumptuous ‘left overs’ breakfast was assembled by yours truly this morning. We had toast with a slice of cheese topped with scrambled eggs and the left over pot roast ‘n juices with fresh tomatoes and potatoes (fried up). A yoghurt with fresh berries for ‘dessert’. Coffee on the side. Delicious!!
We then set off for North Cape. Our first stop was only three minutes away from where we’re staying. The Great Canadian Soap Company makes soap and other products from goat’s milk. I picked up three scents of soap (Fisherman, Watermelon, and Peach). I also bought a little travel sized bath salt for Shelley to have when we’re on the road.
Continuing on down the highway we passed Cavendish, the Green Gables Heritage Place, Lucy Maud Montgomery’s Birthplace (this is a big deal to some folks!), winding our way to North Cape, the most northerly tip of Prince Edward Island.
Afternoon Summary
Being a little bit of a drive today, Shelley felt like stopping for coffee, so we stopped at this little place called Mama’s Café – Bakin’ Express coffee drive-thru, but we parked. It was neat because it has a sign that says “carnivore”, “gluten-free,” and “keto friendly”…. I guess they want to cater to everybody!
Arriving at North Cape’s lighthouse we discovered that is was a fully automated, functioning lighthouse that did not support tourist visits. The Wind Energy Institute of Canada is housed right next door to the lighthouse and had an interpretive centre you could visit. We walked around got a good feel for the area and enjoyed the beach boardwalk. It was neat to just know that we were at the Northernmost Point of Prince Edward Island!
Our next stop was Norway!! (well, a road named Norway…but close enough!).
We then drove down about 45 minutes to West Point. This is the most western part of the island. I joked that Shelley should buy a sweatshirt that says, “West Point PEI” so that when I wear my “East Point PEI” shirt we’d have coast to coast covered!
The West Point Lighthouse looked really cool and they were painting it – black and white striped. The inside is actually a place where you can book to stay – there are about thirteen rooms here with two of them located inside the lower parts of the lighthouse.
We pressed on from there towards Cavendish but Shelley was on the hunt for a locally made tea pot to replace the one she has at home. The one promising location which had a lot of house-made pottery did not have any teapots available, sadly. We did try a couple other locations, but the teapots they had were ‘Made in China’. That wasn’t what she was wanting.
Evening Summary
We came back to Cavendish to walk out on the boardwalk and take in the view. We walked down onto the beach and took some photos. It was beautiful. Shelley stepped into the surf and confirmed it was just as cold as it looked!!
We bumped into the couple who are renting the cottage two down from us here. Shelley recognised them from yesterday when she spoke with them at the laundry house on location here. That was a fun coincidence.
We’ve come back to the cottage to relax and enjoy some wine before we do our ‘pre-pack’ for tomorrow morning’s departure after breakfast.
Daily Highlights
- The best moment for us today was probably getting back to the cottage after a long day in car seats. It was nice to change, freshen up, pour some vino from our box, and settle in for a relaxing evening.
- Our funniest moment today was when we were driving on some random highway (to us) and Shelley smelled ‘French fries” in the air…then about 20 seconds later we see the humungous “Cavendish Farms” factory (see photo below).
- It surprised us to see just how many places here have ‘rental cottages’ on their property or commercially available. It’s like its own industry here especially on the way between Brackley Beach and Cavendish and just beyond.
- The West Point lighthouse we visited today is the tallest of the lighthouses on PEI and is a square-tapered tower which was built after PEI joined Confederation in 1873.
Logistics
- We travelled a big distance today via car and only got out to walk a couple of times. Maggie was a real trouper today. She’s exhausted and resting in her carrier now.
- We bought gas to fill up for tomorrow’s long journey. 40.332 L of gas @ $2.046/L for a total of $82.52 – that was roughly 3/4’s a tank full.
- We decided tomorrow with the six hours of driving ahead of us to do one hour on and one hour off of driving. That spaces things out for us and keeps the driver ‘fresh’ for their turn instead of each of us slogging through 3 or 4 hrs at a time.
Closing Thoughts
It was nice to see the two sites today, but the final analysis was that it was too much driving for what we experienced. Our only ‘claim for fame’ is that we’ve done the four touch points of North, South, East, and West on the island. Still a pretty cool feat.
